Giacometti
November 2020
17” x 13” x 1.5”
Polymer clay, copper wire, wood, and nails

Inspired by the revolutionary sculptor Alberto Giacometti, the piece depicts a contour line representation of his portrait as well as form inspired by his sculptures. Giacometti is said to have always depicted men in motion and women still, perhaps as a reflection of the societal standards of the early 20th century, when he lived. However, I chose to show a male figure still, a slight nod to Giacometti’s life and the restraints and terrors he lived with. From seeing many people in his life struggle and die from illness, to poorly dealing with his own impotence, Giacometti was a flawed individual who faced adversity, and I wanted to reflect that here.

Awarded Scholastic Gold Key for Sculpture.
