The Beluga of the Ball
April 2025
Co-created with Layla Haider
Created using Unity Game Engine and Procreate

I put in a lot of effort to make the game resonant, all while challenging myself to create something that is relaxing, and less focused on a deeper conceptual scale. I tend to not normally create things with that in mind, so it felt out of my comfort zone to do. I think more than anything this is an example of Illinx, where the game creates sensations for the player. Through the music, the art, and the movement, this game evokes a feeling of rest, and being at ease. Perhaps the player may go into the game with a competitive attitude, but hopefully after spending two minutes with our game they just feel a little bit happier, and content.

Because our lovely beluga insists upon taking her time. This is especially apparent when the game speeds up toward the end, even though we very intentionally tried to avoid inducing unnecessary stress, even at this point in the game. The player receives rewards through the music notes that they collect, seeing their score visibly increasing, and enjoying Edith Piaf’s gorgeous La Vie En Rose as a happy beluga whale. You physically can only do so much, restricted to moving slowly. No matter what, if you miss a note or not, you have to go on and just try to do better next time. It pushes you to feel at peace because you’re not fighting against the game in the choices you feel you’re able to (or should be able to) make.
