After learning about how surrealism was a response to the world wars, I started to wonder more about how so often our response to terror is the absurd. There’s a different kind of escapism felt when the place you’re escaping to doesn’t exist. War and death are things so immediate and real that with so much of it, happening so suddenly, it would make sense how harsh of a turn people can ricochet to. Reality is pushed so far that it can feel like your best friends are bright blue.
