Should, Siberian Wildfire Collage
2020

August 2020
12” x 9”
Magazine colage and acrylic paint on paperboard

Siberia is one of the coldest places in the world. It shouldn’t be burning. The ozone should be intact, the atmosphere should be clean, and the ice should be frozen. I should be able to walk to school and take a deep breath without immediately coughing. I should have a right to fresh air, clean water, and a stable environment. There should be consequences for destroying my planet. You should care about what you do to the world, should care about the generations that will come after you.

The world clearly isn’t as it should be, but so many people are acting as if it doesn’t matter and continue destroying and breaking apart the world. Because of this, nothing in this collage is whole or intact, everything at least slightly broken up, except, of course, for the fire and smoke. Growing up in a world broken apart and watching it be broken down further, it feels as if one of the biggest issues is how people don’t want to acknowledge what’s happening. There need to be more discussions about climate change to make people realize the severity of this issue and recognize how it is a crisis that requires an immediate, active response.
